The Museum Heist
Ed grabbed my backpack and yanked me down behind the bush. My back hit a rock and I almost let out a shout before he stuck his hand over my mouth.
“Dude? What are you doing? You’re gonna get us caught! Don’t you see that flashlight shining? Now turn those glasses of yours into hyperfocus and let’s do this”.
I said I was sorry but there was no time to dwell on it, we needed to get inside and get that jewel. We had heard on the news that it was being held at the National Museum of Time, a museum full of exhibits from different time periods. Now this wasn’t any ordinary jewel, it’s been said to have been passed down through hundreds of generations dated back thousands of years. Its value only going up. Once we heard that on the news, we knew we’d have to get our hands on that jewel by any means necessary. Ed and I knew if we were able to get that jewel, our lives would be forever changed..
“Okay, on my signal, we’re gonna run left, got it? That cop doesn’t seem too bright, nearly as dull as his flashlight” Ed said.
He was pointing towards a door on the side of the building, it looked like the easiest way to get in, probably the closest entrance we had. Before I could think anymore, he held up his hand at me and started sprinting. I was still half-way on the ground, stumbling over that rock I hit while getting up. I pushed my way through the bush, scraping my legs and arms on the twisting thorns. I ran as fast as I could, turning my head to make sure the cop hadn’t come back around yet. Once I had reached the door, Ed was already there trying to open it.
“Dude. Good news and bad news. The good news, that was super slick, that cop never knew what hit him. The bad news, the door is locked. We might need to find another way to get in. Or we could do the fun way and kick down this damn door!” he whispered as he rubbed his hands together.
I gave him a look of uncertainty.
“Aw c’mon man! Whaddya say? We bust down this door and get that jewel or take the long boring route of being sneaky? You better make a decision quickly before that cop comes back. So what do you want to do? You wanna be loud n’ proud or sneaky?”
Sure sneaking in was probably a safer and better option, but I wasn’t awake enough to bother.
I told Ed to break that door down.
“Oh yeah dude! This is exactly why I chose you for this job, you know how to have fun. Now let’s kick down this door and run” Ed said.
I didn’t really know if this was the right idea, we’re so much more likely to get caught, but I could use the adrenaline rush to wake me up. Besides, this museum is huge, there are plenty of places to run away and lay low if we were to get caught.
“Alright, I’ll count down from 3, on go we both kick this door down.”
“Ready?”
I nodded.
“1”
“2”
I drew my leg back and prepared to kick it forward as hard as I could.
“3!”
We both lunged at the door and it went flying open, letting out a loud snap as one of the hinges broke. I almost fell to my knee, stumbling forward before picking myself back up again.
“Okay, we need to go, they’ll be here any second” Ed said shuffling away.
He was right, I could already hear the heavy footsteps of that cop outside hurrying towards the door, with radio chatter drawing closer I knew we had little time.
Ed began to run, so I followed. He took a sharp turn down a hallway which nearly had me skid out and fall over. By this point, I could hear a barrage of footsteps behind us, probably close to 5 or 6 cops charging our way. Just before I turned the corner I heard a loud shout.
“Over there!”
They saw us and now knew exactly where we were headed. I’m sure they knew this place better than we did, I was sure they’d be able to cut us off and split up. I asked Ed what we should do.
“Dude, I don’t know,” he said out of breath.
“They’re behind us, there’s too many to take down and they have tasers and guns dude. We have some good distance between them. Any ideas?”
I mentioned that we could either hide or keep running, I didn’t really want to keep running, my legs were tired already. However hiding felt risky, stopping in one place could be a death wish. Plus they weren’t too far behind us, finding a good hiding place would be hard to do.
“Well? I’ll leave it up to you, what do we do? They could start shooting any moment”.
Which would be safer?
